The first edition of the Premio Leonardo took place in the United States in 1994 and was awarded to Ferrari for passionately contributing for years to technological and sport activity, and to Prof. Allen Mandelbaum for the exceptional contribution in transmitting and fostering amongst the anglophones around the world his knowledge of classic and contemporary Italian poetry and in particular for his outstanding translation of the Divine Comedy into English.
Since 1995 the ceremony has become a prestigious event which takes place annually under the auspices of the President of the Italian Republic at Palazzo del Quirinale.
The highest acknowledgement to the initiatives of the Comitato Leonardo is given by the attention and participation of the President of the Italian Republic who awards the winners, designated by a highly representative jury, at the presence of Italian authorities, the Diplomatic Corp, and the mass media.
