2003 – Gilberto Benetton
Leonardo Prize WinnersChairman of Edizione Srl, his family’s holding company, Gilberto Benetton, a recipient of the Order of Merit for Labour, has helped to launch the activities of the Benetton Group, which is present in 120 countries. Since 1995, via Edizione Srl, Gilberto Benetton has overseen the diversification of activities required in expanding to meet the challenges of the world market. By grasping privatisation opportunities, he’s forged a network of companies which, from Autostrade to Telecom Italia, and from Autogrill to Grandi Stazioni, provide high-quality services and infrastructures. Since 1995 the Benetton Group has doubled its revenue in Italy and tripled its presence in Europe (from 3 to 9 countries). The group has established a significant presence in North America, which accounts for around 55% of its consolidated balance sheet, and indisputably leads the airport and motorway sectors. The group’s total workforce has risen from 7,600 to 37,000 people, including 20,500 in North America. From being an Italian company in 1995, it has now become a successful multinational and is a world leader in the concessions market, and therefore a real driver of wealth and employment for Italy.
